Marian McPartland: The great lady of Jazz Piano
A born child prodigy, Marian Portland started playing the piano at age three years. She is a training on violin, and both the piano. His real name is Margaret Marian Turner. A student of classical music, got his musical education at the Guildhall School of Music London, but his heart was not in studying classical music. She fell in love with jazz masters such as Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Mary Lou Williams and the likes. His family opposed to their tendency towards jazz music and tried to keep their land in the Town Hall.
She went against the wishes of his family and joined a group – Keyboards Billy's Mayerl-set of four piano vaudeville. Most of the concerts that the group had shows for the allied troops were fighting in the Second World War in Europe. During the tour, while playing in Belgium, she met her future husband and Chicago trumpeter Jimmy McPartland in 1944. They married some time after at a military base in Germany. They played at her own wedding.
The couple moved to the country home of Jimmy and settled in Chicago after the war is over of. Later he changed his residence to Manhattan where they stayed in the same building as the sisters were staying Nordstorn. He formed a trio there. Marian has a concert in the jazz club in New York's Hickory House. For eight years from 1952 to 1960, was the resident there. During his stay there, she caught the attention of the celebrity audience and all the stars of the era of Broadway and Hollywood would be reduced to see her perform. His regular audience consisted of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Steve Allen and Oscar Peterson.
His passage through the Hickory House though was not creatively satisfying for her as she would have liked. In the middle game and then quickly would be shifted to nearby jazz clubs, where he played and studied Duke, Basie, Monk, Bud Powell and Dave Brubeck's music. She said to a question about this habit her saying, "My goal was to hear everything, and play a lot of melodies of the musicians."
In the following years saw Marian records for various record labels. She started her own label in 1969. The coming years also was associated with the Concord Jazz label. He got launched a radio program on WBAI-FM 1964, which consisted of interviews and recording results. This led to another radio show hers – Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on National Public Radio, which is still functioning. Holds the record for being the cultural program of longer duration on National Public Radio. Some of the programs were Launched in the CD that had invited her and other pianists playing released by Concord Records.
A few artist that has had on his program include Ray Charles, Bill Evans, violinist Stephane Grappelli, Warren Vache and Joe Wilder. Marian is still active despite turning 91. He had a big birthday bash with a group of jazz musicians in the Club of Dixxy-Cola Club. She joined the performers, in addition to members of their own group – trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, Gary Mazzaroppi and Glenn Davis.
She was known to be excellent in adapting to the styles of his guests on the show. Moreover, she did also record a lot of his own compositions. His songs are well known Twilight World, There Will Other times, the environment and in the days of our love. He claims he can not read music even received formal training in music when I was young. She is adept at transposing a tune to any key and play well. His last known composition Portrait of Rachel Carson, in honor of environmentalist Rachel Carson, in his centennial birth anniversary.
His ease in memory of a great number of jazz tunes and play them on the spot. Also could handle almost any listening mix of jazz or the person playing her would be playing. Marian won her first Grammy in 2004. She was honored with the Trustees Lifetime Achievement citing its legacy as an educator, writer and radio presenter. Despite the onslaught of the years, she is as alive as ever performing, radio announcer playing and composing. She along with Dave Brubeck and Billy Taylor were the first recipients of the annual Jazz Achievement Awards courtesy the no. Radio 1 station jazz in the United States. Berklee School of Music inferred about his honorary doctorate in 2005.
