Any suggestions for the transition to Double Bass Electric Bass?
I've been an electric bass player for years, but recently I have taken a great interest in Rockabilly music and I like to start playing the bass. I know nothing about bass, and not many people there where I live that knows anything either. Does anyone have some tips to make the transition less painful? Perhaps installation tips (prices, best brands, brands avoid, etc.), techniques, etc.? Any help would be appreciated.
Hi, I'm strictly a type electric bass, although I dabbled a bit with the game vertical acoustic – so I know all about broken fingers. I remember that in the dim and distant past that Lee Rocker, who played upright to the Stray Cats, published an instructional video on Rockabilly Bass. I'm not 100% sure of its existence, but you might check out Amazon to see if an old VHS copy is available used. Otherwise you can see any Stray Cats vids to see his technique, especially how to use slaps (completely different from the technique used in slap'n'pop electric). Going to be hard on your fingers – you will want to invest in something like liquid bandage or some variation. It puts a clear coat on the blisters and allows you to keep fingers from getting too grating. Otherwise, try to use to fleece both side of the fingers as possible instead of the points. Gear – I am an expert but I will offer what I know. Probably want to use an amplifier and Mike acoustics – leaving the microphone to give more volume rather than play harder. The amplifier should not be too high, it is likely that it could only run the bass amp it currently uses. As for the real low – can not offer recommendations, but from a perspective of cost and availability that you may be able to find a decent used acoustic 3/4-size or 7/8-size, none of these will be slightly lower that the noise you'd find in a symphony orchestra. I hope that helps and good luck with Rockin 'in rockabilly! Have fun.
